‘…..The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance but the Lord looks at the heart.’ – 1 Samuel 16:7

How amazing is that? God doesn’t look at how expensive our clothes are or what our makeup looks like. He looks straight through all that and just sees our heart. However…this doesn’t mean that our confidence is immediately boosted. As a girl you go through lots of body changes, get spots at certain times of the month and can be made to feel insecure if you don’t look like the latest celeb on social media. If you choose to not wear makeup then you can get criticised and if you do choose to wear makeup then you can also get criticised. Sometimes you can’t win.

I wear makeup most days, I’m a hairdresser so my job is all about peoples appearance, therefore I must go to work looking presentable and make it look like I really put a lot of effort into my outer looks. Somewhere along the line I stopped thinking about how I was feeling on the inside and how my attitude towards others was and purely concentrated on looking ‘perfect’. Who was I trying to look perfect for?..well after years of being told I was ugly I started to believe it and just caked on the makeup. Although I have always loved makeup and dressing up I never saw it as something fun to use to ‘decorate’ what God has given me, I saw it as something to cover up what other people didn’t like. Many people will be told that they are ugly or they aren’t pretty or skinny enough. Well, who cares? You are the daughter of a King. He holds you in his right hand and he has the most amazing plan and future for you. ‘I can do all this through him who gives me strength’. – Philippians 4:13. This is something to hang onto to next time you feel anxious or insecure.
You do not have to dress a certain way or look a certain way or be the same as everyone else. God has made you. God has designed you. So go be the amazing individual one-of-a-kind person that you are. Go be encouraging and inspire other girls to feel OK to be different. Next time you see someone maybe wearing something you think is cool but maybe you wouldn’t wear yourself, go tell them. Something so small like that can maybe turn someones day around!
But remember truly ,the most beautiful thing you can have is a beautiful heart. It doesn’t matter how beautiful the outside is, if there’s nothing to shine out of it, it doesn’t really matter. And just how on a beautiful day you feel the warmth and the sun rays that’s how a beautiful person is, you feel their warmth all around you.The true beauty lies in the smile that you give to people not just the pretty lip colour you have on.
